“I want to tell a story that began in 1980. In Argentina, it was the era of de facto government and my parents decided, with good sense I suppose, to send me to study for a year to the United States as an exchange student.

At the airport, before boarding the plane, my dad handed me a cassette of instrumental tango. He later could not remember this but, at the time, he said it was for me to stay in touch with my roots, my affections, with my culture.

It was that simple fact. And even though I started dancing seven years later in 1987, that day in 1980 the tango became something fundamental in my life. Tango gave me everything – a job, my friends, travel and my wife, Lola Díaz.”

Our Tangueros and Tangueras
Mark your calendars for the Passionate Embrace Milonga on the evening of Sunday, September 29th. This one-time milonga is being put together to celebrate the publication of local tanguera Sandra Vander Schaaf’s book, Passionate Embrace: Faith, Flesh, Tango. The book is set in Vancouver’s own tango community and tells the story of how Argentine Tango inspired a fresh understanding of body and soul. The event is a book launch and milonga, with DJ Vince Lam. All are welcome.

Now we would like to offer our very own Homenaje to John Sanders. Some of you may not know John well because he moved to Victoria to be closer to his family. Nevertheless we have John to thank for maintaining the tango list and the website http://www.allvancouvertango.com/ We can always be sure to have the latest information available. And it’s thanks to this website that so many dancers visiting from all over the world find our local milongas so that we can enjoy meeting and dancing with them. John comes over to dance in Vancouver fairly often so be sure to say hi. Thank you again, John.

And our favourite milonga, La Tangueria Esposito, now organized by Clarry Smits and Elizabeth Hudgins, has a new website http://latangueriaesposito.com/ complete with a tango calendar. And you can always find the latest newsletter there to refer to through the month.

See you on the dance floor very soon

Hola Tangueras and Tangueros!

Milongas in Vancouver

First of all, thank you all for sharing in the 15th Anniversary of La Tangueria Esposito.  And thank you to Wendy and Lucio for hosting for the last 4 years, always with the help of Benji. Now they have passed the torch to Clarry and this last Tuesday was a great evening. Adrienne and Steven and Mike took some great photos which are on Facebook and I’m sure the group shot will soon be added to the Photo Gallery on the website.

And again thanks to Wendy for hosting the Wednesday Praxis with the help of her team – can it possibly be 10 years already? Vince and Adrienne will take over the Practica making sure we all still have an opportunity to practise and perfect what we learn. http://tangopraxis.ca/

In case any of the milongas take a break over the summer, please check the Calendar page on http://www.allvancouvertango.com/

The ever popular Granville Island outdoor milonga will be Saturday July 13 from 5 pm to 8 pm and the Granville Street outdoor milonga will take place on the four Saturdays in August. http://www.javamilonga.com/

Special Events in Vancouver

This weekend Vancouver’s favourites Fernanda Ghi & Guillermo Merlo will be here to give workshops and of course there will be a Gala.  Gabriela has the full program on her website http://www.bctango.com/  Fernanda and Guillermo are very much in demand so take advantage of the opportunity to study with them.

A new summer event is starting in Sidney-by-the-Sea on Vancouver Island. Every Saturday afternoon there will be dancing in the bandshell at Beacon Park Pavilion with visiting DJ’s; check out the list.  It sounds lovely and to avoid the cost of the ferry, you can head over there without a car and take the bus to Sidney – I think #72 but check with the organizers. We’re told the Pacific Buffet on the ferry is very good.  http://www.tangopacifico.com/

Regional Events

If you enjoyed classes with Cynthia and Toto, they will be teaching in Seattle this weekend http://www.tangopacifico.com/

Seattle’s TangoMagic will be next weekend July 11 – 15.  5 days and nights full of tango!  With Master classes with Pablo Inza and Mariana Dragone – pre-registration required.  Workshops also by Alex Krebs and Oscar Casas & Anna Miguel. For those of you who adore alternative music, there will be an Alt Tango weekend in Portland the weekend of August 30 to be held at Tango Berretin.  Check for more details:  https://www.facebook.com/events/190884407734600/
